Tim Wood

Analytical Psychotherapist

My career as a qualified psychological therapist began when I completed a doctoral training in clinical psychology in 1994. I subsequently trained in Jungian Analytical Psychotherapy and qualified in 2007.

There are a variety of psychotherapeutic approaches, ranging from the behavioural therapies, which focus on active or conscious efforts to change problematic behaviour, through the cognitive therapies that aim to change unhelpful thinking patterns, to the psychoanalytic therapies, in which the understanding and explication of unconscious processes underlying emotional difficulties is sought. Furthermore, there are different schools of psychotherapy found under the various approaches, which have more or less subtle differences of emphasis.

Different people with different questions or needs may benefit more or less by the different therapeutic approaches. My approach is, broadly speaking, psychoanalytic and I ultimately completed a Developmental Jungian training because this is the approach that made most sense to me and was most helpful to me.

I offer psychotherapy to adult individuals and have worked in both the NHS and independent practice for many years. However, I left the NHS at the end of 2019 and now work solely in private practice.

During my career I have worked in community mental health teams alongside psychiatric colleagues and nursing colleagues, in a surgical setting treating both adults and children with burn injuries, and in one of the increasingly rare NHS psychoanalytic psychotherapy services

I am registered with the British Psychoanalytic Council and abide by their code of ethics, (link below).

I  am currently a member of  the training committee for the Analytical  Psychotherapy Training: Birmingham, (link below), which is run under the auspices of the West Midlands Institute of Psychotherapy, (link below).
